Autumn Blues

Good bye summer... not that we really had one anyway! As farmers i feel like that's all we do, complain about the weather, rain or shine. But when our yearly 'crop' depends on it you can understand why. For instance, we're currently deciding when to put the tups out (male sheep) which will decide when we lamb next year. But I don't know what the weathers going to be like tomorrow never mind next April! What a super power that would be! Our hills aren't the kindest to new lambs, plenty of holes and ditches to get stuck in and when the weather turns here, it really does pour down. So the weather really can make a difference to how many lives are lost and how much income the farm makes that year.

Although the highland cows are more forgiving, not much seems to phase them. I've watched the girls contently munching away on the rushes in 2 ft of snow! I can just imagine our dairy cows faces if i even opened the shed door to that, probably with a similar remark to my Mam... "shut that bl**dy door!" On an icy winter's day after dealing with cars stuck and pipes frozen, you can be sure the highlands will put a smile on your face. Often with snowy beards where they've been munching the grass through the snow! But what are your favourite things about the colder months?
